  • Likely

    Lobella sp. 'Thai Red'

Sold as the hobby culture Thai Red

The seller lists Lobella sp. as the Thai Red Springtail. The genus is confirmed, and species level identification is not currently planned. Anecdotal 1

Where the name comes from

The red springtails from Thailand entered the worldwide hobby in late 2021 with no scientific name. Obvious tubercles showed they were Neanurinae, and they were later placed in Lobella with a cf. The genus is now confirmed and the cf. has been dropped. Anecdotal 1

If you sell or buy under this name

Tip When an identification is tentative, write cf. before the species name and keep it until the match is confirmed. Anecdotal 2

What would settle it

  • Which *Lobella* species is the Thai Red?

    Identification Needs a specialist

Why it matters. The genus is confirmed but the seller does not plan a species identification. Pages cannot give the animal a species name without one.

What would help. Slide-mounted adults examined against the Lobella literature, with tubercle and chaetae counts, and a voucher kept with a collection.

  • Which genera and species are the red and white neanurid hobby cultures?

    Identification Needs a specialist

Why it matters. Thai Red, Thai Red Spiky, Thai Ruby, Pennywise and Santa Claus all look like plump coloured neanurids. Colour alone cannot place them, and visually different lines may or may not be different species.

What would help. Vouchers from each line scored for tubercles, setae, eyes, mouthparts and claws against the revisions of the group.
