On your device

Your choices are saved in your browser, on your device. They are the reading level, the temperature and volume units, the theme, reduced motion, the equipment and region you pick in the identification key, the screen size you set for true-size drawings, what you choose in the label maker, and any culture journal entries you write. They are never sent to the site. Clear your browser data to remove them.

Nothing here is a cookie. The site uses local storage only, and only for the things above.

On the site's servers

• The site runs on Cloudflare. Like every web server, Cloudflare handles your IP address to deliver pages, and it keeps standard logs for a short time to run and protect the service.
• When a search finds nothing, the site records the words that were typed and the language of the page. It does not record your IP address or any identifier. Text that looks like an email address or a long number is dropped first. We read these to see which questions the site fails to answer.
• The identification key, the calculators and the simulator run in your browser. What you pick is not sent anywhere.

Forms

The correction and sighting forms use Cloudflare Turnstile to block bots. Turnstile runs in your browser and may check signals about it. It loads only on the form page. Cloudflare describes how it works in its own documentation.

A report holds what you type. An email address is optional. If you give one it is stored with the report, shown to moderators only, and never published. A sighting you submit is published without your name unless you ask to be credited.

Other sites

The site loads no advertising, no analytics scripts, no outside fonts and no embedded videos. Links to sources, iNaturalist and similar sites leave this site and follow their own policies.
