Pick a species

Folsomia candida, sold as the temperate or common white springtail, is the species most of these sellers use for their standard cultures. Hobby consensus 1–4
Springtails US rates both Folsomia candida and Coecobrya tenebricosa as Beginner level, with very fast reproduction. Anecdotal 5

Choose a medium

Container and air

MI Beneficials found that a culture container can be too big. It recommends anything from a 6 oz cup up to no bigger than a 2.2 quart tub. Anecdotal 3
Springtails US adds a small vent covered with 35 micron ultrafine mesh. That gives enough air to prevent a dangerous build up of gas without drying the culture. Anecdotal 5, 8
MI Beneficials keeps its cultures airtight and opens the lid every 2 to 3 days for an air exchange. It says springtails slow down from too little oxygen and too much carbon dioxide when the lid stays shut. Anecdotal 3

Feed lightly

Sellers give different feeding intervals. Springtails US says every 3 to 7 days, Frog and Frond says about once a week, and MI Beneficials says a small dusting every 2 to 3 days. Hobby consensus 3, 4, 8

What to watch for

Mold in a clay culture is usually caused by overfeeding. The usual fix is to stop feeding until it clears, or to scrape aggressive mold off the clay surface. Anecdotal 4
Warning In the worst case, too much yeast can kill a culture by creating a high concentration of carbon dioxide. Anecdotal 4
