Culture springtails on soil

  • Soil can be compost, topsoil or coir. For newly caught species Springtails US advises the most organic matter you can find, and recommends compost because it holds a lot of edible organics. (at Materials Required)
  • Use a sealed bin or an 8 to 16 oz deli cup for small counts. (at Materials Required)
  • Cut or drill a small hole in the lid or side and glue 35 micron ultrafine mesh over it. That allows enough air to prevent dangerous gas build up without compromising humidity. (at Setup Instructions)
  • Add 1 to 3 inches of soil. (at Setup Instructions)
  • Add bark, charcoal or other hides for the springtails to gather on. They make harvesting easier. (at Care and Harvesting)
  • Feed every 3 to 7 days and keep the soil moist. Moist soil is best, not sopping wet. (at Care and Harvesting and Extra Information)
  • The easiest way to harvest from soil is to lift the hides with tongs and tap them off, or to collect springtails directly with an entomology aspirator. (at Care and Harvesting)

Start your first springtail culture

  • On soil you lift bark, charcoal or other hides out with tongs and tap the springtails off, or collect them with an entomology aspirator. (at Care and Harvesting)
  • Some springtails have only been proven to culture on soil, or do much better on soil than on other media. (at Introduction)
  • Springtails US adds a small vent covered with 35 micron ultrafine mesh. That gives enough air to prevent a dangerous build up of gas without drying the culture. (at Setup Instructions)
  • Sellers give different feeding intervals. Springtails US says every 3 to 7 days, Frog and Frond says about once a week, and MI Beneficials says a small dusting every 2 to 3 days. (at Care and Harvesting)
  • Every seller gives the same rule about amount. Give only what the springtails can eat before the food rots or molds. (at Care and Harvesting)
